Houston is the largest city in the state of Texas. It is also the 4th largest in the United States.

In August 1836, John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen purchased 6,642 acres of land and named the town Houston after Sam Houston. Houston was granted incorporation on June 5, 1837.

Houston is one of the fastest growing major cities in the United States. Houston is the county seat of Harris County. A portion of Houston also extends into Fort Bend County on the southwest side and into Montgomery County on the northeast side.
