Thiago Mendes was the standout performer in Vasco’s 1-0 victory over Athletico-PR on Sunday at São Januário. The captain not only secured the three points for the Cruz-Maltino but also drew attention off the pitch by joking with head coach Renato Gaúcho on social media.

After the match, Renato posted a message celebrating Vasco’s strong run and recent results. In the comments, Thiago Mendes joined in the fun and teased the coach with good humor: “I’ll show you my DVD.”

The goal against Athletico-PR also highlighted Thiago Mendes’ impressive form this season. The defensive midfielder has now scored four goals in 2026, equaling one of his best career tallies. He previously netted four goals in three other seasons: in 2014 with Goiás, in 2016 with São Paulo, and in the 2017/18 campaign with French side Lille.

Now, Thiago is aiming to surpass his best scoring season, which came in 2017 when he scored five times for São Paulo. With confidence high and playing a key role in Vasco’s midfield, he remains one of the team’s standout performers in 2026.
