Fiorentina has secured their place in Serie A after a challenging campaign, achieving the minimum objective of avoiding relegation. David de Gea’s team mathematically confirmed their survival in Italy’s top flight, a significant relief for the historic club.
Beyond the battle for Champions League spots, the big news in Italian football was that Fiorentina managed to mathematically guarantee their survival. The Viola moved up to 15th place with 38 points, seven clear of 18th-placed Cremonese, who are in the relegation zone, with only two matchdays remaining.
However, after the final whistle, the Tuscan fans booed their players despite the survival achievement. The 2025/26 season had started with much higher ambitions, as Stefano Pioli, former AC Milan coach, took over as head coach.
But things went wrong quickly for the team, and Pioli was sacked in early November. His side were bottom of the table with just four points when he left after matchday 10. Under Paolo Vanoli, the team gradually recovered and secured their first Serie A victory in December. In the Conference League, they reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated by English side Crystal Palace.
Fiorentina, who will celebrate their centenary next season and count De Gea among their players, lost their owner since 2019, 76-year-old Rocco Commisso, founder of Mediacom Communications, in January.
